Ford decided to save a couple of cents on the cheaper US-spec. Focus models (LX and ZX3) by omitting the variable-delay intermittent windshield wiper function. Fortunately the only difference between models with this feature and those without is the switch itself, and it is very simple to retrofit the switch with the feature. This article shows you how to make the change.
I have a 2000 Focus ZX3, so if you have a different model or year, please double-check the part numbers to ensure they are correct for your particular vehicle.
Wiper switch assembly, either:
I called my local dealer's parts department and was quoted the list price of about $38 for the part, which they did not have in stock. I ended up getting it from parts.com for less than $30 shipped. It arrived in about a week. Note that the parts.com web site seems to get confused if you enter the dashes in the part number. Leave them out and it is quite happy though. A scan of the part label is below:
Thanks are due to the posters at Team FocalJet's Focus message board for posting the original information on this simple modifiction. Thanks to squiggee2000 in particular :-)
If you feel at all uncomfortable with working on your car, don't do it. Or at least, get somebody with experience to help you out. Any work you undertake on your car is your responsibility. I can't help you if anything goes wrong.
1. First, use a 10mm socket or wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal. The battery cover lifts up after you've released a catch on one side. See photos 1, 2 and 3. The stock radio should remember all its presets, but you may want to write them down just in case yours does not. If you have an aftermarket unit that needs a security code to function after loss of power, make sure you know what it is before it is too late.
2. Remove the top steering column cover by gently depressing the two tabs on either side of the column with a flat-blade screwdriver. Be gentle to avoid scratching the finish. The cover should easily lift up. You don't need to remove it completely. See photos 4 and 5.
3. Depress the tab at the back of the wiper switch assembly and lift it out of the steering column. You won't be able to lift it all the way out until you also disconnect the electrical connector on the back of the switch. Use the screwdriver to press the locking tab on the connector down and you should be able to remove the switch completely. See photos 6 and 7.
4. Connect the electrical connector to the new switch and drop it into the space previously occupied by the old switch until it locks into place.
5. Replace the top steering column cover. Make sure it is located properly and press down firmly until it snaps back into place.
6. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and replace the battery cover.
7. Clean up and enjoy!
