The Focus ECU has a diagnostic mode which can be accessed through the instrument panel. To access it, hold in the trip reset button while turning the ignition switch to the on position. There is no need to start the engine. Continue to hold the button in until TEST is displayed on the LCD panel. You can then use the button to cycle through all the various readouts as shown below. Of course, performing this procedure will reset your trip odometer back to zero.
The photos below show the displays after each press of the trip reset button. Some of the functions are obvious while others are somewhat difficult to decipher. 1 - Gauge sweep. All gauges sweep to their maximum positions, then return to normal:
2 - LCD segment test. All LCD segments illuminate so that any faulty segments can be identified:
3 - Bulb test. All ECU-controlled bulbs illuminate so that any faulty bulbs can be identified:

6 - Diagnostic trouble codes. If there are no diagnostic codes stored the display will alternate between DTC and none. If codes are present, they can be sequentially accessed by further presses of the button:
7 - Vehicle speed in miles/hour. 000.0 is shown:
8 - Vehicle speed in kilometers/hour. 000.0 is shown:
9 - O62.o is shown:
10 - Engine speed in revolutions/minute. 0803 is shown:
11 - Some kind of fuel volume indication? 079t is shown:
